Home Safety Visits

Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is encouraging residents to invite a firefighter into their home.

The house is generally where we feel safest. It is also the place where the majority of fire deaths and injuries occur. Your chances of survival will depend on how quickly and safely you are able to get out.

Every year in the UK there are over 70,000 fires in the home. Around 600 people die and more are injured. This could be avoided if the hazards in the home were identified and eliminated and the residents had a prepared plan in case of emergency.

Firefighters conduct fire safety assessments during the visit. Occupiers will be given advice on avoiding fires and may be able to have a ten-year smoke alarm fitted free of charge. Firefighters can assist the residents in the development of a fire escape plan.

Other organisations including Social Services, Age Concern and the Pensions Service have been trained. Their outreach workers carry out basic fire risk assessments within the homes of their clients.

To request a Home Safety Visit, call free on 0800 73 11 822 or text details to 078 00 00 2476. Fire Service personnel will contact you to arrange a mutually agreeable time for the visit.
