Somerset County Council’s Cultural Service provides the library service, consisting of reference, information and lending services through public service points and remotely. We have a network of 34 libraries and 6 mobile libraries. Mobile libraries currently make some 1100 stops across the county. There is a service for schools in Somerset provided by Resources for Learning, based in Bridgwater. The Cultural Service also supports the arts in Somerset.
Services to housebound individuals and to residential homes are delivered by volunteers, a ‘Good Neighbours’ scheme and by mobile libraries. Library users have access to over 1 million books, CDs, DVDs and videos, and talking books. Current and historical material relating to the historic county of Somerset is available, principally through the Somerset Studies Library in Taunton Library. There is a specialist Performing Arts Library in Yeovil Library, with access to music and drama resources.
The People’s Network (PN) provides free ICT facilities, including the Internet and Office applications, in all libraries. There are over 300 computers available. The PN can be accessed by joining the library and using the membership card and individual PIN to log on. Sessions are normally limited to one hour per day. It is also possible to use the internet for a shorter period without becoming a member. Children under the age of 10 need to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. Children aged 10-15 can access the internet provided a parent or legal guardian has signed an Internet Consent Form in the library.
