The West Somerset Area

West Somerset District covers an area of approximately 725 kmē of coast and countryside. From the mouth of the River Parrett in the northeast with the boundary running south-westwards inland across Somerset to meet the County border with Devon on Exmoor; it then follows the County border which bisects Lorna Doone country to arrive at the coast between Lynmouth and Porlock. The superb scenery of Exmoor National Park, the Quantock and Brendon Hills draws visitors each year to discover this unspoilt corner of the West Country.

The area is predominantly rural in character with agriculture and tourism being the most important commercial activities. The population of the district is approximately 35,600 (2004 Mid-year estimates) with about one third living in Minehead, which is the principal town. Only the peripheral villages of Dulverton, Dunster, Porlock, Watchet and Williton significantly interrupt the surrounding countryside.

The main access routes into the area are from the A39 from Bridgwater and the A358 from Taunton with the M5 passing close to both these centres thereby bringing West Somerset into contact with the national road conurbation network.
